An Hour w/ The Elders lesson: Kobe Bryant & Mamba Mentality

Kobe Bryant tore his Achilles against the Warriors, but limped to the free throw line and buried two free throws in the ultimate display of Mamba Mentality.

Our aim during these Hour with The Elder sessions is to share inspiring stories about of the past to promote healthy principles into the foundations of our community, our younger generations.

Kobe Bryant was known as the Black Mamba—relentless.

In a close game against Golden State with 3 minutes left, he tore his Achilles tendon—one of the worst injuries in basketball. Most players would have left on a stretcher. Kobe didn’t. He limped to the line on one leg, shot both free throws—swish, swish—then walked off the court himself.

Those were his last shots that season. And his team won by those 2 points.

Today some players flop over the lightest contact. Kobe tore his Achilles, made his shots anyway, and walked away with strength and honour.

Real toughness. No excuses. Leaving it all on the floor for the team.

At Primitive Fit let’s build that same mentality. So when life gets hard, get up and keep going—like Kobe.

Weekly Grit Builder: “The Kobe 1% Challenge”

Goal: Build mental & physical toughness by doing one hard thing every day for 7 days. Inspired by Kobe’s obsession with daily improvement, early mornings, extra reps, and preparation over talent.

How it works

•  Pick one daily task from the list below & do it every day for 7 days (even when tired or busy).

Daily Task Options:

1- Extra Effort Reps (mental toughness):

  • Do 10–20 extra push-ups, squats, or free-throw attempts after practice or at home—when you’re already tired.

  • Hold a plank, wall sit, or deep squat for 1 minute longer than feels easy.

2- Early Rise Drill (Kobe’s 4 AM habit):

  • Wake up 15–30 minutes earlier than usual and do a quick 5–10 min bodyweight workout (push ups, squats, jumping jacks, plank) or stretch.

3- No-Excuse Finish:

  • When doing homework, chores, or a drill, commit to finishing strong.
